โ๏ธ Synopsis
Love Through a Prism is a Japanese original net animation (ONA) created by Yoko Kamio (Boys Over Flowers) and produced by Wit Studio. Set in early 1900s London, it follows Lili Ichijoin, a talented aspiring oil painter from Yokohama who enrolls in Saint Thomas Art Academy under one brutal condition: she has six months to become the top student, or she must return home and abandon her artistic ambitions.
At school, Lili collides with the academyโs top-ranked artist, Christopher โKitโ Church, a messy, brilliant mystery who is (unfortunately) way more than just a talented classmate. Rivalry sparks, feelings creep in, and the story starts pushing them toward choices that donโt care about timingโฆ or love.
Theme song: โStar Flowerโ โ Chilli Beans.
๐ฌ Episode Highlights (Key Beats)
- Ep 1โ3: London arrival, the academy pressure-cooker, stolen blue paint, and the countryside lily search.
- Ep 4โ6: National Gallery, Drunnheim Hall, the gala, the โSilver Lilyโ gown situation, and Catherine enters the chat.
- Ep 8โ12: Portrait drama, feelings get exposed, the pub fight + that slap, and reconciliation after Kit disappears.
- Ep 13โ17: Critique success, separation, war tension, the dock farewell, and the confession that keeps not happening.
- Ep 18โ20: Five-year time skip (1919), โlost at sea,โ Yokohama reunion shock, and the full-circle rainbow ending.
๐ผ Music Notes
The vibe leans dreamy and cinematic โ perfect for a story that lives in longing, timing, and โalmosts.โ The theme song โStar Flowerโ by Chilli Beans. fits the seriesโ delicate mood like it was made for it.
๐ฌ My Take
As much as it frustrated me, I honestly get why Kitโs priority was to get back to his brother in England and make sure the family affairs were in order. Itโs not out of character for him either โ heโs chosen duty over his personal feelings before when the war pressure kicked in.
Stopping in Yokohama felt like a super lucky happenstance, like he was trying to get one last shot at seeing Lili in person. And againโฆ he does the honorable thing (classic Kit) by not forcing her into an impossible choice right there between him and Shin. Shin is his friend, and he had to know there was a real chance everyone had moved on in those years.
So yeah โ frustrating to watch, but also a very natural way for things to play out. I love that Lili went back to London on her own strengths and they were finally able to be together once the timing actually worked out.
This felt more in line with what could happen in real life, and I loved seeing these two silly lovebirds reunite after everything they went through.
๐ง Tropes & Notes
- Arranged Marriage: Kit and Catherineโs childhood engagement + the weight of aristocratic duty.
- Betty/Veronica energy: Catherine vs. Lili dynamicโฆ but it evolves in a way that feels surprisingly human.
- Flower Motifs: Lilies everywhere โ crest, โSilver Lilyโ gown, and the emotional symbolism.
- Time Skip: Five years later (1919) hits like a truck.
- Deliberately Monochrome: Final stretch uses black-and-white + grain as a depression/absence motif.
- Medium-Shift Gag: Random chibi/deformed moments for comedy (especially during chaos scenes).
- Running Gag: Emotional scenes getting interrupted by stomach growls because people forget to eat.

A chaotic, stylish classic that blends gothic humor, reverse-harem antics, and unexpected heart. If you love unhinged energy with emotional depth, this one still hits.
