This Season 1 Blu-ray/DVD set is part of my personal collection, which honestly makes reviewing Black Butler even more fun.

There is just something extra special about seeing Sebastian and Ciel on the shelf in physical format. The gothic artwork fits the series perfectly and it feels like such a fitting collector piece.

Synopsis

In Victorian London, twelve-year-old Earl Ciel Phantomhive serves as the Queen’s Watchdog while investigating crimes and conspiracies hidden beneath England’s polished surface.

At his side is Sebastian Michaelis, an impossibly capable butler who is secretly a demon bound to Ciel through a contract. Sebastian obeys every command with perfect precision while waiting for the day he can finally claim Ciel’s soul.

Season 1 mixes mystery, dark humor, revenge, and supernatural danger with a dramatic anime-original second half that leans fully into gothic tragedy.

My Take

Black Butler Season 1 still feels iconic. Sebastian immediately steals every scene with how polished, dangerous, and effortlessly cool he is.

Ciel gives the story its emotional core. He is proud and sharp, but underneath that is so much grief and trauma driving every choice he makes.

The gothic atmosphere carries everything beautifully. Candlelight, mansions, dramatic music, and supernatural chaos all feel perfectly matched.
