Mr. Mega Man Vol. 1

Story by Yuushi Kawata โ€ข Art by Yukito โ€ข Published by Udon Entertainment

Mr. Mega Man Vol. 1 is such a funny and unexpected spin on the classic Mega Man world. Instead of another nonstop battle against Dr. Wily, this volume asks what happens when the hero grows up, the fighting stops, and everyone has to figure out normal adult life.

โ˜… My Review

The idea alone had me interested right away. Mega Man growing up and becoming a dentist is the kind of concept that sounds completely unserious at first, but that is exactly why it works. It takes a character who is usually tied to action, battles, and saving the world, then drops him into the most regular adult life possible.

What makes Mr. Mega Man fun is how committed it is to the bit. Rock is not the only one trying to live normally. The former Robot Masters have all moved into civilian jobs too. Cut Man being a barber, Flame Man working as a chef, and Top Man becoming an online influencer are the kind of jokes that feel obvious in the best way. They make you go, โ€œyeah, that actually makes sense.โ€

I also really liked that the humor is not just random references thrown at the reader. The manga clearly understands the Mega Man universe and uses that familiarity to create jokes that land harder if you already know the characters. For longtime fans, it feels like a playful reward. For newer readers, the comedy is still easy to understand because the premise is so clear.

The slice-of-life angle surprised me the most. This is not just โ€œwhat if Mega Man was olderโ€ as a one-note joke. There is something genuinely charming about seeing a world that no longer needs its hero. Rock has to exist outside of being Mega Man, and that gives the story a funny but weirdly thoughtful edge.

The art also fits the tone really well. It keeps the recognizable Mega Man designs while aging things up in a way that feels fresh. Rockโ€™s adult design with the lab coat and helmet is such a strong visual hook, and the clean comedy expressions help the gags move quickly.

My only small critique is that some jokes will hit harder if you already have Mega Man nostalgia. This is still readable without being a hardcore fan, but the deeper your history with the franchise, the more fun the references become. Honestly though, that is kind of the point.

โš™ Overall, this is a clever, nostalgic, and genuinely funny reimagining of Mega Man that turns retirement, adulthood, and former villains with day jobs into comedy gold.

โœฆ What I Loved

  • The concept is instantly funny. Mega Man as an adult dentist is such a wild idea, but the manga commits to it completely.
  • The Robot Master careers are hilarious. Cut Man as a barber and Flame Man as a chef are exactly the kind of jokes that make this premise shine.
  • It uses nostalgia well. The references feel playful instead of forced, especially for readers who already love the franchise.
  • The slice-of-life twist works. Seeing heroes and former enemies navigate normal life gives the story a surprisingly charming angle.
  • The art keeps the Mega Man spirit. The designs feel familiar, but the adult-life reimagining gives everything a fresh personality.
