๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ Premise & Vibe

Birushana is set during the Genpei War (1180โ€“1185), an actual historical civil war in Japan between the Heike (Taira) and Genji (Minamoto) clans. You play as Shanao, the secret heir to the Genji clanโ€”except no one knows sheโ€™s a woman. Trained as a warrior and raised in the mountains, Shanao hides her identity to protect herself and those around her.

But as battle brews and hearts collide, her hidden truth begins to unravelโ€”both in bloodline and emotion. Each of the five love interests pulls her down a unique path of love, war, self-discovery, and in some cases… total devastation.

If you like your otome with moral conflict, poetic storytelling, forbidden romance, and high-stakes drama, Birushana is for you.

๐Ÿ’˜ Love Interests

โค๏ธ Tomomori (Taira Clan) โ€“ Villain route / obsession + secrets
My #1 from the jump. Iโ€™ve always loved the โ€œfalling for the villainโ€ trope, and Tomomori nails it. Heโ€™s elegant, twisted, and deeply tragic in a way that reminded me of Kazama from Hakuokiโ€”dangerous, but full of buried vulnerability. His route digs into Shanaoโ€™s mysterious origin and identity in a way the others donโ€™t. Their relationship is dark and magnetic, filled with tension and quiet emotional explosions. Heโ€™s not just a villainโ€”heโ€™s the mirror to everything Shanao is trying to suppress. I couldnโ€™t get enough.

๐Ÿ’” Yoritomo (Genji Clan) โ€“ Powerful, cold older โ€œbrotherโ€ / forbidden love
This route destroyed me emotionally. Yoritomo is Shanaoโ€™s older brotherโ€”or so she thinks. Thereโ€™s deep affection between them, but itโ€™s buried beneath political tension, duty, and taboo. The โ€œforbidden loveโ€ angle is strong here, and the payoff is huge when itโ€™s revealed that Shungen is his real brother, not Yoritomo. The weight of every stolen glance and unspoken word in this route made it feel like the most intense romance overall.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Noritsune (Taira Clan) โ€“ Rivalry / enemies-to-lovers done right
Third place goes to Noritsune, who starts off viewing Shanao as a pure rival. But as they fight side by side and grow to understand each other, the energy shifts hard. Thereโ€™s a fierce bond between them that builds fast, but doesnโ€™t feel rushed. His story is short but packed with character growthโ€”his inner conflict, his loyalty, and how much he starts to care. It’s more than loveโ€”itโ€™s understanding and respect. Their chemistry genuinely surprised me.

๐ŸŒ“ Shungen (Genji Clan) โ€“ Childhood friend / noble but flat
I wanted to love Shingen more. Heโ€™s protective, loyal, and clearly devotedโ€”but the emotional depth didnโ€™t hit the way I expected. His route had one of the most dramatic finales, and I did enjoy the rawness of the ending. The sexual tension between him and Shanao was strong, but his arc lacked the same impact the others had. He was good, justโ€ฆ not great.

๐Ÿค Benkei (Genji Clan) โ€“ Older man / mentor type / too platonic
Benkei was a bit of a letdown romance-wise. His route felt more like admiration than actual romantic love. Thereโ€™s emotional support, yes, but very little romantic tensionโ€”and thatโ€™s kind of essential in an otome. I felt like I was watching a mentor-student dynamic rather than a budding romance.

๐Ÿ’ญ Final Thoughts

Birushana is an emotional, immersive historical otome that rewards patient, thoughtful players. Itโ€™s not heavy on fluffโ€”every route comes with weight, secrets, and difficult choices. But when it hits? It hurts so good.

Each route adds something vital to Shanaoโ€™s story, and the emotional arcs arenโ€™t just about romanceโ€”theyโ€™re about identity, freedom, and legacy. I loved how grounded she felt as a protagonist: strong, introspective, and never passive.

Some routes definitely shine brighter than others (Tomomori supremacy), but the experience as a whole is unforgettable. If youโ€™ve ever wanted to fall in love during wartime while hiding who you are and questioning your bloodline… yeah, this is your game.
