✨ Appearance

In his original body, Wei Wuxian is considered handsome enough to rank fourth among the top cultivator gentlemen of his generation. The corners of his eyes and lips often seem to hold a smile, giving him an immediately lively and teasing charm.

During his youth, he wears the purple robes of the Yunmeng Jiang Clan. After turning to demonic cultivation, his appearance becomes far more iconic and ominous: black robes, red accents, and Chenqing hanging at his waist with blood-red tassels.

After the Burial Mounds, he grows paler and colder in appearance, matching the darker legend that grows around him. When resurrected in Mo Xuanyu’s body, he remains handsome, but the body is weaker, more unfamiliar, and shorter by about 6 cm.

🧠 Personality

Wei Wuxian is energetic, mischievous, intelligent, outspoken, observant, and impossible to ignore. He cares little for rules or empty decorum and loves teasing others, especially when they react.

Beneath that chaos, though, he is deeply self-sacrificing and protective. He repeatedly risks himself for others, from small acts of kindness to devastating sacrifices, including the transfer of his golden core to Jiang Cheng.

He also has a fierce sense of justice. He protects innocents no matter their name, clan, or status, and that same justice can make him ruthless. Even then, he remains capable of regret, nuance, and self-reflection.

📜 Background

Street Child to Lotus Pier

Wei Ying is the only child of Wei Changze and Cangse Sanren. After both parents die during a night-hunt, he survives on the streets of Yiling, fighting stray dogs for food and developing a lifelong fear of them. Jiang Fengmian eventually finds him and brings him home to Lotus Pier.

Growing Up in the Yunmeng Jiang Clan

Though never formally adopted, Wei Wuxian grows up alongside Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli and becomes part of their family in all but name. His arrival creates tension with Yu Ziyuan and sparks Jiang Cheng’s jealousy, but over time the two boys become deeply bonded.

Cloud Recesses and Lan Wangji

At the Cloud Recesses, Wei Wuxian becomes infamous for breaking rules, sneaking alcohol, goofing off, and provoking Lan Wangji. He also reveals his brilliance early by questioning whether resentful energy could be used rather than merely suppressed.

Lotus Pier, Golden Core, and Burial Mounds

After the massacre of Lotus Pier and Jiang Cheng’s loss of his golden core, Wei Wuxian gives Jiang Cheng his own in secret. Captured later by Wen Chao and thrown into the Burial Mounds, Wei Wuxian survives three months in a place that should have killed him and emerges having founded demonic cultivation.

Yiling Patriarch, Downfall, and Resurrection

Then he helps turn the tide of the Sunshot Campaign, but the cultivation world soon fears him more than it respects him. His protection of the innocent Wen remnants, the politics around the Yin Tiger Tally, and the tragedy of Qiongqi Path and Nightless City all lead to his death. Thirteen years later, Mo Xuanyu sacrifices himself in a forbidden ritual and summons Wei Wuxian back into the living world.

🔥 Abilities & Skills

  • Intelligence: Remarkably sharp, imaginative, and quick to analyze people and situations.
  • Charisma: Social, persuasive, and naturally good at winning people over.
  • Teaching: An excellent mentor to the junior disciples.
  • Swordsmanship: Extremely skilled with Suibian in his first life.
  • Archery: One of the strongest archers of his generation.
  • Music: A highly talented flutist capable of playing by ear.
  • Swimming: Very proficient thanks to his Yunmeng upbringing.
  • Hunting: Used to hunting pheasants in his youth.
  • Alcohol Tolerance: Can drink absurd amounts while staying functional.
  • The Six Arts: Rites, music, archery, charioteering, literacy, and numeracy.

⚔️ Weapons

  • Chenqing: Wei Wuxian’s flute and principal demonic cultivation weapon.
  • Suibian: His sword, which seals itself after his death so only he can draw it again.
  • Bow & Arrows: Another one of his strongest specialties.

Combat Style

In his first life he combines swordsmanship, archery, and physical power. In his second life, because Mo Xuanyu’s body is weaker, he relies more on speed, evasion, talismans, and demonic cultivation.

🌀 Inventions & Demonic Cultivation

  • Demonic Cultivation: The path he founded using resentful energy.
  • Yin Tiger Tally: A devastating weapon capable of commanding armies of fierce corpses.
  • Spirit-Attraction Flag: Draws resentful entities to a target.
  • Final Eyes Summoning: Lets spirits possess painted objects.
  • Empathy: Allows the user to view the memories of ghosts or fierce corpses.
  • Paper Metamorphosis: Lets him attach his soul to paper for spying and investigation.
  • Compass of Ill Winds: Detects evil creatures.
  • Wen Ning: His experiments lead to Wen Ning becoming the first conscious fierce corpse in known history.

🏰 Important Relationships

Lan Wangji

The emotional center of Wei Wuxian’s story. What begins as teasing and friction grows into one of danmei’s most beloved romances. Lan Wangji is the person who stands beside him when others fear or abandon him.

Jiang Cheng

Brother, rival, heartbreak. Their bond is layered with love, jealousy, sacrifice, resentment, and silence. Wei Wuxian gives him his golden core, and yet they still lose each other for years.

Jiang Yanli

The softest part of his early life. She loves him as family, defends him as family, and remains one of his deepest emotional anchors.

Wen Ning & Wen Qing

These relationships show one of the clearest truths about Wei Wuxian: he never forgets kindness, and he never stops distinguishing between the guilty and the innocent.

Lan Sizhui / Wen Yuan and Jin Ling

Wei Wuxian’s protective, mentoring side is strongest around children and younger cultivators. He becomes an important guide figure to both Lan Sizhui and Jin Ling.

💬 Lay’s Thoughts

Wei Wuxian is one of those protagonists who feels fully alive. He can be hilarious, reckless, observant, kind, terrifying, romantic, tragic, and weirdly dorky without ever feeling inconsistent. That range is part of why he hits so hard.

What makes him so compelling is that the world keeps calling him a villain when so much of his story is built on empathy, sacrifice, and doing the right thing even when it ruins him. He is messy and human and stubborn and brilliant, and that makes him way more memorable than a perfect hero ever could be.

I also love that his story is not just about romance. His relationship with Lan Wangji is beautiful, but his bonds with the Jiang siblings, Wen Ning, Wen Qing, Jin Ling, Lan Sizhui, and the junior disciples give his character so much more weight.
