My Love Story!!
Ore Monogatari!! • Madhouse • 2015
🎀 Why This One Feels Special
My Love Story!! stands out because it takes a male lead who would usually be treated like a joke in other romance stories and makes him the emotional center of something genuinely lovely. Takeo is huge, loud, awkward, and intense, but he is also sincere, protective, loyal, and deeply kind. That contrast is what makes this series work so well.
✨ Synopsis
Takeo Gouda is not your typical shoujo male lead. He is huge, intimidating at first glance, and so used to being overlooked that he has basically accepted romance is never going to go his way. Every girl he likes ends up falling for his handsome, cool best friend Makoto Sunakawa instead, and Takeo has gotten used to quietly stepping aside.
Everything changes when he saves the sweet and soft-hearted Rinko Yamato from being harassed on a train. Yamato immediately sees Takeo for who he really is: brave, kind, dependable, and unbelievably caring. The problem is that Takeo is so convinced no girl could ever like him that he assumes Yamato must be in love with Suna too.
What follows is a romance full of misunderstandings, huge emotional reactions, heartfelt friendship, and the kind of earnest sweetness that makes this series feel refreshing even years later. Instead of dragging out will-they-won’t-they forever, the story lets Takeo and Yamato actually become a couple early and then explores what it means for two shy, intense people to figure out love together.

🎶 Music Notes
The music in My Love Story!! matches the tone of the anime really well. The opening has that bright, hopeful energy that immediately tells you this is going to be an emotional but feel-good ride, and the ending keeps the sweetness going. It is not a soundtrack that overwhelms the story, but it absolutely supports all of Takeo’s huge feelings, Yamato’s blushing chaos, and the softer romantic moments.

🫶 My Take
What I really liked about this anime is that it does not just use Takeo’s appearance as a gimmick. Yes, the series plays with the contrast between his intimidating looks and his giant heart, but it never reduces him to a joke. He feels like a full romantic lead, and that alone makes the anime memorable. He is dramatic, loud, awkward, protective, and so sincere that it becomes impossible not to root for him.
I also liked that once the relationship finally starts, the anime does not end there. A lot of romances build everything around the confession and then stop, but this one actually lets you watch the relationship grow. You get the nervousness, the awkward communication, the jealousy, the sweetness, and all the little moments where two people are clearly in love but still figuring out how to express it.
Yamato is incredibly cute, but what makes her work is that her affection for Takeo never feels fake or forced. She truly adores him, and the story does a good job showing why. She sees his kindness immediately, and even when her feelings get flustered or insecure, they still feel grounded in how much she values him. Their size difference and overall visual contrast could have felt silly in a lesser story, but here it just makes their tenderness stand out more.
Suna is also a huge reason this anime works. He could have easily become the frustrating rival character, but instead he is one of the best wingmen in anime. He is quiet, loyal, sharp, and funny in a dry way that balances out Takeo’s intensity. Their friendship is honestly one of the strongest parts of the whole series. You can feel how much they care about each other, and it gives the anime emotional weight outside the romance too.
If I had one real frustration, it is that Takeo’s density can be a lot sometimes. I get why it exists because his past made him genuinely unable to believe someone like Yamato could love him, but there were definitely moments where I wanted to shake him. Still, even that frustration usually comes from the story making you care so much. Overall, this felt warm, funny, and deeply lovable from start to finish.
✨ Deeper Analysis
One of the most interesting things about My Love Story!! is how it plays with shoujo expectations. Normally, the tall, handsome, quiet best friend would be the romantic lead and the huge, loud guy would either be comic relief or someone the heroine learns not to judge. Here, the story flips that. Takeo is the emotional center, and the narrative asks the viewer to see romance through sincerity rather than conventional attractiveness.
The anime also leans hard into the “gentle giant” idea, but it does so in a way that feels earned. Takeo is absurdly strong, ridiculously dramatic, and constantly saving people, yet the core of his character is insecurity. He has spent so long being rejected in favor of Suna that he genuinely cannot process the idea that someone would choose him first. That insecurity is what makes his journey hit harder than just a cute romance premise.
Yamato and Takeo as a couple are almost aggressively wholesome, but not in a boring way. The series gets a surprising amount of mileage out of simple relationship milestones like holding hands, going on dates, meeting parents, misunderstandings with other people, and first kiss nerves. Because both of them are so earnest, even small things feel emotionally huge.
Suna’s role matters a lot too. He is not just there to make Takeo look better by comparison. He is his own person with his own emotional distance, own family issues, and own subtle warmth. The friendship between Takeo and Suna helps the anime avoid becoming one-note sweetness. Their bond gives the story a backbone, and some of the most touching scenes are not romantic at all, but about loyalty and support.
The pacing is also pretty satisfying because the anime does not drag out the central misunderstanding forever. That was smart. It lets the series shift into what makes it memorable: not the chase, but the relationship itself. For me, that is where My Love Story!! really wins.

⚠️ Content & Audience
This anime is mostly very wholesome, but it does begin with harassment on a train and includes a few tense rescue situations, jealousy arcs, romantic misunderstandings, and emotional insecurity. Nothing about it feels especially dark overall, but it does mix comedy with sincere emotional beats.
This is best for viewers who love shoujo romance, sweet relationships, strong friendships, soft comedy, and stories where kindness is treated as genuinely attractive. If you want spicy drama or toxic mess, this is not that. If you want comfort, sincerity, and a lead couple you can actually root for, this absolutely is.
Takeo himself. He is one of the most lovable romance leads out there.
His density can go from cute to painfully clueless once in a while.
Anyone craving a wholesome romance with actual heart and a genuinely good male lead.
