DOGGO Vol. 1
DOGGO Vol. 1 caught me by surprise. I knew the premise sounded funny, but I was not expecting it to be this chaotic right away. The story introduces Doggo as a pug who is absolutely not normal. He talks, fights, judges people, insults potential owners, and somehow carries himself like a grizzled action hero trapped in a tiny dog body.
Sally finds him by the Sumida River and takes him in, but things spiral quickly because she is not just a regular high school girl. She is the daughter of a yakuza family, which means kidnappings, intruders, assassins, rival groups, and danger keep following her. Doggo naturally responds by becoming her unofficial bodyguard.
What made this work for me is the dynamic between Sally and Doggo. Sally knows Doggo protects her, but he is still a dog, and that makes their bond funny, simple, erratic, and strangely sweet. It is silly in the best way, but it still has enough action to keep the volume moving.
The comedy lands because Doggo takes everything way too seriously. He is dramatic, violent, loyal, and somehow adorable, which makes the absurd setup feel surprisingly charming.
Talking pug. Yakuza daughter. Fake date chaos. School assassins. Doggo beating up intruders after being told to “act normal.” This volume knows exactly how ridiculous it is.
Volume 1 includes 8 chapters plus an extra. The story moves from Sally rescuing Doggo, to kidnappings, school danger, Falconeye/Yoshikawa, another dog named Michelle, and a bigger conflict involving Sally’s father.
