Honey Bee & Lemon Balm Vol. 1

A soft but really charming BL romance about an ex-yakuza finding a second chance through a gentle florist, a nighttime flower shop, and feelings that bloom before he knows what to do with them.
๐ฏ My Review
Honey Bee & Lemon Balm Vol. 1 was such a warm and charming surprise. The story follows Kaoru Mitsuya, a former yakuza who has just gotten out of prison and has almost nothing left. He is lost, broke, and trying to figure out what kind of life he can even have now. Then he meets Yuichiro Shirouzu, a beautiful florist who runs a flower shop at night, and that small meeting becomes the start of something soft, healing, and romantic.
What made this volume work so well for me was the contrast between the characters. Kaoru looks rough and intimidating, but he is honestly so awkward, sincere, and easy to root for. Yuichiro has a delicate and gentle presence, but he is not boring or flat. There is a quiet mystery to him, and I liked that the story lets him feel soft without making him weak.
Their romance has such a sweet pace. It does not feel overly rushed, but it also gives enough cute moments to keep the volume exciting. Kaoru falling fast and hard was adorable, especially because he keeps getting flustered, jealous, and confused by his own feelings. The comedy lands because he is trying so hard to be serious, but his heart is basically giving him away every other page.
I also loved the nighttime flower shop setting. It gives the manga a softer, dreamier mood while still keeping that city-at-night edge from Kaoruโs past. The story has humor, romantic tension, misunderstandings, and a little danger, but it never loses its gentle feeling. It is the kind of BL that feels easy to recommend to someone who wants romance with emotional growth instead of nonstop drama.
โก What I Loved
- The pairing is instantly cute. Ex-yakuza x delicate florist is such a good setup, and the manga knows exactly how to use it.
- Kaoru is lovable. He may have a rough past, but his awkward crush energy makes him so easy to cheer for.
- Yuichiro has quiet depth. He feels soft and elegant, but there is clearly more going on beneath the surface.
- The romance feels sweet. The emotional build is gentle, funny, and full of little blushy moments.
- The flower shop setting is perfect. It gives the story a cozy nighttime atmosphere that makes the romance feel even warmer.
