Countdown to Yes

By Roji • Animate International • English Print Edition

A sweet friends-to-lovers BL about Wataru, who wears his heart openly, and Minato, who keeps his feelings locked away until their reunion turns old friendship into something much more romantic.

Friends to Lovers Photography Roommates Reunion Romance Soft BL Personal Read

Synopsis

Meet Wataru, an open book who wears his heart on his sleeve, and Minato, a man who always seems calm, collected, and impossible to read. Even though they are complete opposites, their shared love of photography brings them together in high school, and their bond grows so strong that they eventually become roommates during university.

It is only after Minato moves away for work that Wataru realizes his feelings were never just friendship. Three years later, Minato returns, and Wataru hopes they can reconnect like before. But this time, Minato may be the one quietly aiming for something more.

Friends or lovers? That is the question sitting between them, and the title makes the wait feel even cuter.

Character Corner

Minato Yokoi from Countdown to Yes

Minato

Cool, quiet, and hard to read. He keeps his emotions tucked away, but his actions say way more than his words.

Wataru Nakano from Countdown to Yes

Wataru

Bright, expressive, and emotionally honest. He realizes his feelings late, but once he does, the tension gets so cute.

My Thoughts

This was such a soft and charming personal read. I loved that the romance is built around two people who already have history together, because it makes every little moment feel heavier. Wataru realizing his feelings only after Minato leaves gives the story that bittersweet “wait, I loved him this whole time?” feeling, which always hits.

Minato being the quieter one also made the romance extra fun, because his feelings come through more in persistence and small actions than big dramatic speeches. The countdown setup makes the whole manga feel playful, but underneath that, it is really about two friends figuring out whether they are brave enough to stop hiding behind the word “friends.”

Overall, this is cute, soft, and very easy to read if you like low-drama BL with cozy emotional tension.

Final Verdict

Countdown to Yes is a sweet BL manga for readers who enjoy best friends, old feelings, awkward tension, and the soft panic of realizing friendship may not be enough anymore. It is not trying to be overly dramatic, and that works in its favor. It is simple, romantic, and honestly really cute.
