The Princess and the Blade
The Princess and the Blade is a clean YA romantasy about a lonely princess, a scarred knight, unstable magic, and the kind of slow-burn connection that feels soft, emotional, and deeply rewarding.
โก My Review
The Princess and the Blade by AiTommyLove is an absolute 5 out of 5 for me, and honestly, if Goodreads gave the option, I would give it 6 stars. I loved this book for so many reasons: the well-built characters, the setting, the balance between description and dialogue, the feel-good atmosphere, the gorgeous illustrations, the beautiful world, the relationships, the tension, the action, and the soft blossoming slow-burn romance.
The heart of the story is Princess Charlotte and her knight, Hoche. Both of them are crafted so beautifully because they are not perfect. They have flaws, emotional wounds, and moments that make them feel real. Charlotte has more sunshine energy, while Hoche feels like moonlight: quiet, guarded, and carrying so much underneath the surface. Their differences make them complement each other in such a satisfying way.
I also really loved that every character felt distinct. They do not all sound like the same person, which is something I always notice when reading. The way each character speaks and acts makes their personalities clear, and that made the world feel more alive.
The mystery behind the charactersโ backstories is also handled really well. Information is revealed little by little as the story progresses, which makes the emotional growth feel more rewarding. It never feels like the book is rushing to explain everything at once.
The worldbuilding was another strong point. It is clear, spaced out, and connected to the plot. Even when the story explains pieces of the kingdomโs history, it feels less like a heavy info dump and more like an old fairytale being told to you.
The illustrations make the novel feel extra special. The ebook includes several illustrations, while the paperback edition is described as having over 100 original illustrations. They add such a pretty, emotional pop to the story and make it stand out from a lot of other books in the genre.
What truly sets this book apart is the feeling it leaves behind. Some fantasy books feel heavy in a way that makes you feel like you are drowning, but this one feels comforting. It has serious moments, but it also has humor, warmth, and scenes that made me smile. It reminded me a little of why I love Spy x Family: both have silly moments, light romance, action, tension, mysterious backstories, and those feel-good vibes that make the story easy to love.
Since this is the first book in a trilogy, it does end with a cliffhanger. Thankfully, it is the bearable kind. There is enough character development between Charlotte and Hoche to make the book feel satisfying, while still leaving enough mystery and tension to make me want the next installment immediately.
โ Why Read?
- Emotionally wounded characters learning to heal together. Charlotte and Hoche both carry pain in different ways, and watching them slowly understand each other is one of the best parts.
- Sunshine princess x emotionally distant knight dynamic. Their contrast gives the story such a sweet emotional pull.
- Nostalgic fairytale fantasy atmosphere. The kingdom, magic, and royal setting give it classic princess movie charm.
- Gorgeous author illustrations throughout the novel. The artwork gives the story an extra magical touch and makes the reading experience feel special.
- Comforting slow-burn romance mixed with mystery and tension. It has enough softness to feel cozy, but enough intrigue to keep you turning the pages.
โ Charlotte & Hoche
Charlotte and Hoche are complete opposites, but that is exactly why their dynamic works. Charlotte carries the weight of a kingdom while trying to hide her loneliness behind a perfect smile. Hoche carries scars, silence, and the feeling of someone who has been treated more like a weapon than a person.
Their connection does not feel rushed. It feels like two wounded souls slowly learning how to trust, understand, and protect each other.
