My Review

Volume 2 is where Sleeping on Paper Boats finally starts to pull its emotional threads together. After the darker, more confusing setup of Volume 1, this volume gives Kei and Youichi’s relationship more weight, more clarity, and a stronger sense of emotional payoff.

Kitahara Kei is still trapped under the guilt of believing his writing brings death to the people who inspire him. Youichi, however, becomes more than just a muse. He feels like the emotional center of the story, someone whose presence pushes Kei to face the grief, fear, and self-destruction he has been drowning in.

What I appreciated most here is that the ending did not feel like misery for misery’s sake. With a story this dark and poetic, I was fully expecting complete devastation. Instead, Volume 2 finds a way to give these characters a hard-earned kind of healing without erasing the pain they carried.

The artwork remains stunning. The warmer cover palette fits this volume perfectly because the story itself feels like it is moving out of shadow and into something softer. The paneling still has that cinematic, melancholic feeling, but this time there is more tenderness underneath the tragedy.

My critique is still the pacing. Because the full series is only two volumes, some emotional beats and supernatural elements move faster than I wanted. Certain ideas could have used more space to breathe. Even so, this volume made the overall story feel much more complete.

Overall, Volume 2 made me appreciate the series more as a whole. It is still dense, dramatic, and not for everyone, but the emotional landing was genuinely rewarding.

What Stood Out

  • The emotional payoff feels stronger than Volume 1.
  • Youichi becomes the heart of the story.
  • The ending feels healing without becoming unrealistic.
  • The artwork keeps its cinematic, melancholic beauty.
  • The warmer tone makes the final volume feel distinct.
