Perfectly Fine on My Own, So My Fiancé Can Twist in the Wind Vol. 1

By Yahiro Arase • Art by Jun Hareta

Perfectly Fine on My Own Vol. 1 ended up being one of the funniest romance manga surprises I’ve read lately. What looks like a frustrating misunderstanding story turns into a genuinely entertaining shoujo rom-com with a strong heroine, chaotic gossip, and a fiancé who realizes way too late that he completely messed up.

Nicole choosing herself instead of continuing to wait around was already enough to pull me in, but the way the story handles all the high society drama made it even better.

Review

Perfectly Fine on My Own Vol. 1 was way better than I expected, and honestly one of the biggest reasons is that the misunderstandings are actually funny instead of exhausting.

Nicole is constantly ignored by her fiancé Keios, who spends most of his time with Princess Caroline. From Nicole’s point of view, it makes complete sense why she would think there is no real place for her in his heart. So instead of begging for attention, she quietly chooses herself and starts enjoying life on her own.

That was probably my favorite part of the whole volume. Nicole is not loud or dramatic about it. She simply stops centering someone who does not know how to show up for her. Watching her go out alone, read what she wants, and build her own little rhythm felt weirdly satisfying.

Meanwhile Keios is just… painfully clueless. He is not written like a cruel male lead, which is what makes this work so well. He is more like a complete disaster of a boy who never learned how to act around the girl he actually likes. Once he realizes how badly Nicole misunderstood everything, it is already too late for him to fix it easily.

Princess Caroline also ended up being one of the most refreshing parts of the story for me. She is not the mean rival or fake friend type at all. She is blunt, a little boyish, and honestly more helpful than Keios deserves. I liked that the story did not force another woman into a villain role just to create tension.

Then you have characters like Lobelia and Emilio making the situation even messier. Their gossip and misunderstandings keep pushing the story into even more chaos, but in a way that stays entertaining instead of annoying.

The art is also really cute and fits the tone well. It keeps everything soft and charming even when the social drama is spiraling in the background.

If you like romantic comedies where the female lead chooses peace, the male lead suffers because he was too slow, and the misunderstandings are handled with humor, Perfectly Fine on My Own Vol. 1 is such a fun read.

Personal Note ♡

I love Nicole so much. She does not embarrass herself chasing after someone who cannot communicate, and that alone made me root for her even harder.

Character Spotlight
Nicole Portret ♡
The female lead and honestly the heart of the whole story. She is graceful, quiet, and much stronger than people give her credit for. Instead of begging for scraps of affection, she chooses her own peace.
Lord Keios ♡
Nicole’s fiancé and the king of being too late. He is not malicious, just unbelievably clueless. A full tsundere disaster who has no idea how to act around the girl he likes.
Princess Caroline ♡
Keios’s childhood friend and the supposed “other woman,” except she really is not. She is blunt, dry, and more of a girls’ girl than people expect.
Lobelia ♡
A gossip-loving rumor mill who starts off being nosy, but slowly becomes more genuinely concerned for Nicole.
Emilio ♡
Lobelia’s fiancé and a professional misunderstanding generator. He overhears one thing and somehow turns it into an entire dramatic crisis.
Albert & Zeke ♡
Part of the student council circle and background cast, but still help build the social atmosphere around all the rumors and misunderstandings.
♡ ✿ ♡
Tropes & Vibes
♡ Strong female lead
♡ Clueless male lead
♡ Misunderstandings done right
♡ Too-late realization
♡ High society academy setting
♡ Gossip and rumor chaos
♡ Soft romantic comedy energy
♡ ♡ ♡
What Worked vs What Didn’t
♡ What I Loved
Nicole choosing herself
Misunderstandings that are funny instead of infuriating
Princess Caroline not being framed as a villain
Keios finally realizing how badly he fumbled
Cute art that matches the tone
♡ What Could Be Better
If you hate misunderstandings as a trope, this still might test your patience a little
Some of the plot escalation only happens because nobody communicates clearly
♡ ✿ ♡
Standout Moment
Nicole quietly deciding she is done expecting anything from Keios and just starting to enjoy her own life was such a satisfying turning point. That energy carried the whole volume for me.
♡ ♡ ♡
Who This Is For
♡ Readers who love shoujo rom-coms
♡ People who want a strong heroine without constant melodrama
♡ Anyone who enjoys late-regret romance
♡ Fans of social gossip, academy drama, and soft humor

Final Thoughts

Perfectly Fine on My Own Vol. 1 is such a fun romantic comedy because it takes a setup that could have been frustrating and makes it genuinely entertaining instead.

Nicole is easy to root for, Keios absolutely deserves to suffer a little, and the side cast keeps the chaos moving in the best way. I had a really good time with this one.

If you like stories where the female lead chooses herself and the male lead has to earn his way back, this one is definitely worth picking up.
