Shugo Chara! Jewel Joker! Vol. 1
Shugo Chara! Jewel Joker! Vol. 1 feels like a sparkly return to a magical girl classic, but with an older Amu and a slightly more mature setup. Seeing her step into middle school while still carrying that same charm made this sequel feel nostalgic and fresh at the same time.
This first volume leans into mystery, magical girl energy, and self-confidence themes while introducing Arcana Academy and the question of the mysterious Arcana Jewels. It definitely feels made for readers who already have love for Shugo Chara!, but it still has enough heart and visual sparkle to make the comeback exciting.
One thing I really liked about this volume is how naturally it brings Amu back into the spotlight. She is no longer the same elementary school girl from before, and that small shift already gives the story a different vibe. There is still plenty of magical girl sparkle here, but the tone also feels a little more focused and fast-moving.
Arcana Academy works well as a new setting because it gives the sequel room to introduce a fresh mystery instead of only relying on nostalgia. The whole idea of students losing hope and confidence ties in nicely with what made the original series so lovable in the first place. That emotional core of believing in yourself is still here, and I appreciated that a lot.
Visually, this is exactly the kind of manga that reminds you why PEACH-PITโs art stands out. The pages are pretty, expressive, and still have that soft magical look that fits the story so well. Amu herself feels instantly recognizable, and the sequel keeps that classic charm while giving the series a slightly updated energy.
I also liked that this volume adds mystery through the Arcana Jewels and pushes the pace a bit more. It made the story feel active right away, even if some parts moved so quickly that a few of the newer characters did not leave as strong of an impression as the original cast. That is probably my biggest hesitation with this first volume. The returning charm is definitely there, but the new supporting cast still needs more time for me to get fully attached.
Overall, I think this is a really solid sequel opener for longtime fans. It feels nostalgic, pretty, and full of heart, with just enough mystery to make me want to keep reading. I would mostly recommend it to people who already know and love Shugo Chara!, because it really does read like a continuation rather than a fresh starting point for complete newcomers.
This was such a cute return to Amuโs world. It may not hit quite as hard for brand new readers, but for fans who grew up with Shugo Chara!, this sequel has a lot of sparkle, heart, and magical girl nostalgia to enjoy.
