โจ Appearance
Sawako is petite and slender with pale skin, thin lips, big brown eyes, and long straight jet-black hair with bangs โ which is why people compare her to Sadako from The Ring. Her smile is rumored to bring good luck because itโs rare and genuinely warm.
She follows school rules closely: uniform, knee-length skirt, blue blazer in winter, short-sleeved dress shirt in summer. She doesnโt care much about cosmetics or accessories.
Outside school, her style stays modest but feminine: long pastel dresses, long coats, and generally covered-up looks. Even on dates sheโs shy about showing skin.
๐ง Personality
On the surface, Sawako comes off shy, distant, and โcreepy,โ and she tends to take words literally and over-analyze situations. But in reality, sheโs kind, honest, and desperately wants real human connection.
Sheโs extremely hardworking and responsible (ranked 3rd in class and later valedictorian), but social skills are her biggest struggle. Sheโs also very selfless and often forgets her own needs.
With the help of Kazehaya, Ayane, and Chizuru, she learns to communicate her feelings and deepen friendships โ and by graduation, sheโs made friends with everyone in class.
๐ Background
Sawako is the main protagonist of Kimi ni Todoke, a high school girl searching for friendship. Her resemblance to Sadako led to rumors, fear, and ostracization โ and her modest nature plus ineffective communication made it hard for her to correct misconceptions.
On the first day at Kitahoro High, she meets Shouta Kazehaya under cherry blossoms and helps him find his way. He becomes the first person she can smile around as herself, not โSadako.โ
Her world begins to change as she forms close friendships (especially with Chizuru Yoshida and Ayane Yano) and slowly learns what it means to truly express her feelings. Later, she studies to become a high school Japanese Language teacher at the University of Education with her rival-turned-best-friend, Ume Kurumizawa.
โก Abilities
- Ridiculously fast runner/jumper: people legit think she โteleportsโ (sports festival soccer match)
- Cooking: makes meals so good people ask for seconds
- Crochet: hats, scarves, tea coasters, slippers, haramaki (she gifts these at Christmas)
Itโs lowkey iconic that her โsuperpowerโ is being wholesome AND fast.
๐ฐ Relationships
Shouta Kazehaya (romance)
They meet as freshmen under cherry blossoms. Heโs the first person to treat her cordially, and she wants to become more like him. She starts wanting to know him better and grow closer.
Sawako eventually realizes sheโs crushing on him after Kurumiโs scolding and Ryuโs definition of romantic love. After she understands her feelings, she becomes nervous, avoids him for a while, then works hard to confess โ and they get together.
Their relationship hits bumps: Kazehaya becomes insecure, and during Christmas Sawako feels lonely when heโs too busy. She finally speaks up, cries, and yells at him for neglecting her โ and that moment resets them back to healthy communication.
In their final year, they support each otherโs future paths. Sawako chooses teaching, Kazehaya chooses sports training. They promise to keep a strong long-distance relationship; she receives a ring on her 18th birthday and a letter when she leaves.
Ayane Yano (friendship)
Ayane is one of Sawakoโs first real friends. Sheโs kind and encouraging but also strategic and protective. She helps with makeovers and relationships, like a big-sister vibe.
Chizuru Yoshida (friendship)
Chizuru is emotional, loyal, and will fight head-on for Sawako. She helps Sawako make friends and often tries to set up Sawako + Kazehaya.
Ryu Sanada (supportive friend)
Soft-spoken and honest like Sawako, Ryu understands her. He helps her realize her feelings and supports her when anxiety blocks communication. He jokes with her too, sometimes misspelling her name early on.
Ume โKurumiโ Kurumizawa (rival โ bond)
Sawako once saw Kurumi as a role model. After the rumor drama and rivalry, they grow closer. Kurumi later returns, reveals she wants to be a teacher too, and they become study partners.
Shino (childhood classmate)
Shino accidentally called her โSadakoโ in elementary school, which helped spark the rumor that followed Sawako for years. Shino feels guilty and cares about whether Sawako is okay in high school.
Kento Miura (one-sided)
He sits beside Sawako in second year, becomes attracted to her, tries to break her and Kazehaya up, fails, and eventually accepts she sees him as a friend.

- Kazehaya (้ขจๆฉ): โfast windโ
- Childhood dream: to become a firefly

๐ Layโs Thoughts
I love Sawako because although people treated her terribly, she still saw the positive and never did wrong to anyone. It is very sad because sometimes it did get to her, but she also never really understood why people were so mean to her even though she never necessarily wronged anyone. Also the way they try time and time again to ostracize her.
I was so happy she was able to find a boyfriend and lovely friends because she really does deserve all the love in the world. I also like how even though she got friends and even a boyfriend, she never changed and stayed her true authentic self, and even helped and accepted others too.
Overall vibe: soft, misunderstood sunshine who stays kind anyway ๐ธ
