Danmei Hub
Danmei (่ฝ็พ; dฤnmฤi; literally โaddicted to beautyโ) is a genre of Chinese fiction that centers on romantic or emotional relationships between male characters. While the term is often used interchangeably with BL (Boysโ Love), danmei developed its own identity through Chinese web fiction communities.
Originally inspired by Japanese BL and Western slash fiction, it emerged online in the late 1990s and quickly became one of the most influential digital literary movements in China. Many stories begin as serialized web novels before expanding into manhua, donghua, audio dramas, and live-action adaptations.
Despite global popularity and massive fan communities, danmei exists under strict censorship policies in mainland China, which has shaped how stories are published and adapted. Even with these challenges, the genre has become a powerful cultural force with an international readership.
