Summary
Set in the winter of 1990, Home Far Away follows Alan Savero, a young man trapped in a home defined by religious abuse. When he meets Hayden Stewart, a free-spirited cook, he discovers for the first time what understanding and kindness feel like. But their connection takes them down a road filled with love, pain, and irreversible choices.
Alan reveals that he was sexually assaulted by his parish priest at age seven, a trauma that shapes his entire life. Hayden becomes his first real source of emotional safety. Together they run away, determined to start over. Along the way, Hayden confronts his own dark past; his mother, who poisoned his abusive father and later died of overdose. Both men find solace in each other, their relationship both tender and tragic.
During a stop at a motel, Alan meets an older woman named Maria who lost her son. They share a brief but meaningful connection, a moment of healing and forgiveness. But when Alan decides to leave, Maria’s grief turns violent. In panic, she chases them with a gun, leading to a tragic accident. Hayden swerves and hits her, setting off a desperate escape.
They flee to Mexico, where Alan insists on visiting a church. Horrifically, the priest there turns out to be the same man who abused him as a child. When Alan calls his parents for support, they shame him again for his “sins.” In despair, Alan shoots the priest.
As the police close in, Alan and Hayden find themselves surrounded at the beach. Alan is shot, but before dying, he tells Hayden that it’s okay — that they are finally free. Hayden drives the car into the waves, fulfilling their wish to be together until the end.
My Thoughts
This story left me stunned. It’s one of the most honest depictions of religious trauma, love, and self-forgiveness I’ve ever read. It explores how blind faith can destroy families, while love — even if fleeting — can save souls. Both Alan and Hayden are products of broken homes, yet together they find something resembling peace.
I was raised Catholic, and I understood the suffocating feeling of growing up in an ultra-religious community where even curiosity feels sinful. This manga captures that perfectly. Alan’s parents never listen to him — not even when he tells them about the priest’s abuse — and that made me furious. The story doesn’t romanticize pain; it forces you to see it.
I adored how Hayden never corrupted Alan. Instead, he gave him space, understanding, and care. Their love was raw, intense, and deeply human. It wasn’t perfect, but it was genuine. Even in death, their connection represents liberation from all the things that hurt them.
Home Far Away is a heartbreaking masterpiece, a story about grief, oppression, and the courage to love when the world refuses to understand you. It’s haunting, beautiful, and unforgettable.
