Magical Girl Dandelion Vol 1

Story & Art by Kaeru Mizuho

Magical Girl Dandelion Vol 1 takes the classic magical girl formula and throws it into something darker, more chaotic, and honestly really fun. Between shadow fiends, emotional friendships, giant magical power levels, and a heroine who just wants to protect the people she loves, this first volume already feels packed with action and mystery.

✦ My Thoughts

One of the things I liked most about this volume is how quickly it hooks you into the world. The concept of fiends being former humans already gives the story a darker emotional edge compared to a lot of traditional magical girl manga. It makes every fight feel heavier because there is always that lingering sadness behind what these monsters used to be.

Tanpopo herself is really easy to root for. She feels energetic, emotional, stubborn, and genuinely caring without coming off as overly perfect. Her friendship with Shade was honestly one of the strongest parts of the volume for me. The dynamic between a cheerful girl and a mysterious shadow fiend protector creates a really fun balance, especially once the story starts hinting that there is way more going on beneath the surface.

I also loved how intense the magical power reveal was. The fact that normal people score around 100 while Tanpopo scored 5,791 instantly makes you realize she is not just another magical girl recruit. It gives the story that “chosen one but dangerous” energy that makes you curious about what she might become later.

The pacing moves really fast, but honestly it works for a first volume because there is constantly something happening. Between Tanpopo unlocking her powers, Peony appearing, the reveal involving her grandfather, and the cliffhanger ending with Alice, the manga keeps stacking tension in a way that makes it very bingeable.

Visually, the manga also stands out a lot. The contrast between bright magical girl imagery and creepy shadow creatures creates such a cool atmosphere. The yellow and black color palette especially makes the series feel distinct right away.

✦ Overall, this felt like a darker magical girl story with emotional stakes, strong character chemistry, and enough mystery to immediately make me want the next volume.

✦ Why You Should Read It

  • It mixes cute and creepy perfectly. The magical girl aesthetic clashes beautifully with the darker monster designs.
  • The friendship between Tanpopo and Shade is genuinely compelling. Their bond already feels emotionally important.
  • The story wastes no time. Every chapter introduces new reveals, powers, or threats.
  • The mystery hooks are strong. You immediately start questioning the magical girl system and the fiends themselves.
