The Broken Ring Vol. 1: This Marriage Will Fail Anyway
The Broken Ring Vol. 1 introduces a romance fantasy that looks like an arranged marriage drama on the surface, but underneath all the elegance, pretty gowns, and noble politics is a much darker story about trauma, survival, past lives, and a heroine desperately trying to escape a fate that has already destroyed her more than once.
♡ My Review
Volume 1 of The Broken Ring: This Marriage Will Fail Anyway immediately pulls you in with a premise that feels almost deceptively simple. Inés Valeztena chooses Cárcel Escalante as her fiancé when they are children, not because she is swept away by innocent love, but because she has already lived through enough tragedy to know exactly what she wants to avoid.
At first glance, Cárcel seems like the classic noble playboy. He avoids responsibility, avoids commitment, and seems perfectly suited for the failed marriage Inés is quietly planning. But that is what makes the story so interesting. Inés wants this marriage to fail. Cárcel, who should have been the easiest person to push away, slowly becomes someone who challenges the careful emotional distance she has built around herself.
One of my favorite parts of this volume is the dynamic between Inés and Cárcel. It has that grumpy cat and golden retriever energy I love so much. Inés is cold, controlled, and emotionally guarded for very real reasons, while Cárcel begins as messy and immature but slowly shows hints of sincerity, curiosity, and growth. Watching him try to understand her, even when he does not fully know what she is carrying, makes their relationship feel more compelling.
What really makes this series stand out is that the regression aspect actually matters. Inés is not just someone with vague memories of another life. Her past lives shape every choice she makes, every wall she builds, and every assumption she has about love, survival, and marriage. The story uses those memories like puzzle pieces, slowly revealing why she is so determined to control her future.
I also love how the story handles perspective. Inés and Cárcel can both feel unreliable at times, but not because they are poorly written or clueless. Sometimes they are unreliable because they are trapped inside their own pain, their own pride, or their own limited understanding of what the other person is thinking. Seeing the same emotional situation from another angle adds so much depth.
The artwork by Cheong-gwa is gorgeous. The soft blue tones, elegant clothing, lace details, and romantic framing give the volume such a polished historical fantasy feel. The fictional Spain-inspired setting also gives the story a refreshing flavor compared to the usual fantasy European backdrop often used in romance fantasy manhwa.
★ What I Loved
- Inés is a fascinating heroine. She is stoic, guarded, and painfully controlled, but every crack in her armor feels meaningful because of what she has survived.
- The regression is important. Her past lives are not just decoration. They directly affect the plot, the romance, and her emotional choices.
- Cárcel has room to grow. He starts off as a frustrating playboy, but the hints of change make him more interesting than he first appears.
- The couple dynamic is addictive. The grumpy cat and golden retriever energy works so well because Inés and Cárcel are emotionally opposite in a way that creates both tension and softness.
- The artwork is stunning. The lace, uniforms, soft blue palette, romantic framing, and historical details make the print volume feel elegant and collectible.
♡ Content Notes
This series deals with darker emotional material beneath its romance fantasy setup, including trauma from past lives, toxic noble politics, emotional manipulation, and painful relationship history. Volume 1 is not overly graphic, but the story clearly hints at heavier themes that become important to Inés’ character and the larger plot.
