Hitting Rewind with You Vol. 1

By Hanamaru Kira

This was such a cute surprise. I went into Hitting Rewind with You Vol. 1 completely blind, and that honestly made the whole thing hit even better. What starts off sounding a little ridiculous turns into a very sweet, nostalgic romance with a playful setup and a lot of heart.

โ™ก My Review

The setup here is instantly charming. Wakaba is a 20-year-old college student who feels like she missed out on all those classic high school milestones, especially romance. So in a moment of desperation and curiosity, she throws on her old school uniform and heads out hoping to experience even a tiny piece of that heart-fluttering youth she never really got to have. That is how she meets Fumito, and from there, the story starts leaning into this very dreamy, very youthful โ€œwhat ifโ€ energy.

What I liked most is that the story knows exactly what kind of fantasy it wants to sell. It is silly, escapist, and a little embarrassing in the best possible way, but it never feels mean about it. Wakabaโ€™s longing is treated with sincerity, so instead of coming off as cringe, it feels weirdly relatable. There is something really tender about wanting to reclaim a version of youth you feel like you missed.

Fumito works so well as the male lead because he matches that energy without making it feel forced. Their chemistry is easy right away, and once the reveal happens that they are both actually college students, the premise becomes even more fun. Instead of the setup falling apart, it opens the door for them to keep playing in that nostalgic space together.

The second chapter especially had me smiling because the whole โ€œinfiltration in a school uniformโ€ idea is objectively ridiculous, yet the manga somehow makes it feel cute instead of absurd. The school festival material was also one of my favorite parts. That section really captures the playful tone of the series, especially once the cosplay club gets involved and everything spirals into even more school-uniform chaos. It feels like the manga fully commits to the bit, and that commitment is what makes it work so well.

By the time the โ€œofficialโ€ amusement park date happens, it stops feeling like two people pretending and starts feeling like two people genuinely falling for each other. The little love-question moment and Fumitoโ€™s honesty were so cute, and the later confession had exactly the kind of simple sweetness this story needed. It is not trying to be dramatic or overly angsty. It just wants to give you butterflies, and honestly, it succeeds.

I also liked how easy this volume was to get through. At 176 pages with four chapters and a bonus story, it is the kind of manga you can fly through in one sitting, but it still gives you enough cute moments to feel satisfied. My one small critique is that because it moves so fast, some emotional beats could have used just a little more room to breathe. Still, for a first volume, it does a really solid job making you want to keep going.

โœฟ Overall, this felt like a soft, nostalgic romcom that fully understands the appeal of reliving the moments you thought you lost and finding romance in the middle of it.

โ˜… What I Loved

  • The premise is adorable. Two college students trying to relive the high school moments they missed is such a fun hook, and the story really leans into the fantasy of it.
  • The chemistry is easy and natural. Wakaba and Fumito click fast, but it still feels cute rather than rushed.
  • The school-uniform theme never gets old. Instead of feeling repetitive, each chapter finds a new way to play with the idea.
  • It delivers butterflies. This is absolutely one of those manga that has you smiling through the romantic moments.
  • The tone stays soft and fun. Even when the concept is a little silly, the manga keeps it charming the whole time.
