Smile Vol. 1
After losing his daughter in a tragic accident and becoming estranged from his wife, freelance journalist Yuushi Kamome is barely getting through each day.
Then members of a mysterious religious organization called the Smiling Hearts Society appear at his door. Yuushi is ready to dismiss them until he notices someone familiar on their flyer: his estranged wife.
Determined to discover what happened to her, Yuushi begins investigating the group and the unsettling world hiding behind its smiles.
I genuinely did not know what I was getting myself into with Smile. I expected something dark based on the cover and synopsis, but this was not what I expected at all. There is something eerie about this manga almost from the beginning, and the deeper Yuushi gets into the Smiling Hearts Society, the more uncomfortable everything becomes.
What really got me was how much the Society seems to know. Information about them is strangely difficult to find, people do not seem willing to talk about them, and the manga starts dropping hints that someone connected to the group may have some serious influence. Then they know Yuushi’s real name. They know his phone number. He is supposed to be investigating them under the fake name Mr. Satou, yet it never really feels like he is the one with the upper hand.
The so-called sacred celebration was where that feeling became even stronger for me. Everything is presented with these smiles and this sense that what is happening is completely normal, while I am reading it thinking, something is seriously wrong here.
I also love that I still cannot tell exactly what I am supposed to be afraid of. Is everything happening because of people and the power this organization has, or is there something else going on? I honestly do not know which possibility would be scarier.
Every time I turned the page, this manga seemed to find something else to throw at me. By the end of Volume 1, instead of getting answers, I somehow had even more questions.
Why It Worked For Me
Smile never lets you feel completely comfortable. Even when nothing obviously horrifying is happening, there is this constant feeling that something is off. I loved not knowing how much of that fear was coming from the people involved, how powerful the Society might actually be, or whether something even stranger is waiting underneath it all.
The Cover
The Buddha imagery immediately makes this cover stand out, especially paired with the distorted smile, black background, and aggressive red accents. After reading the volume, I have even more questions about the imagery and how it may connect to the true origins of the Smiling Hearts Society.
Perfect For Readers Who Like…
Psychological horror, disturbing mysteries, cult stories, unreliable situations, investigative protagonists, and manga that slowly make you realize something is very, very wrong.
Expect…
A mystery-heavy first volume, an increasingly unsettling atmosphere, mature subject matter, disturbing imagery, violence, and a LOT of unanswered questions.
4.7 / 5 Pixels
Volume 1 left me with way more questions than answers, and that is exactly why I want to keep reading. I need to know what is really happening with this Society, where it came from, and just how deep this whole thing goes. I will definitely be getting the other volumes.
Smile currently has 6 volumes available in English. The original Japanese series is complete with 11 volumes total.
