Can You Kiss Me First? Vol. 1
Kanda and Ueno already act like they’re practically dating without realizing it. Sleepovers, borrowed clothes, a spare key… guys, come on. I liked watching Kanda slowly start to question why being “not Ueno’s type” bothers him so much, especially once the jealousy starts kicking in.
What makes their relationship fun is that Kanda has known for years that Ueno is gay. That’s never really been the problem. It’s when Kanda starts thinking about Ueno potentially wanting somebody else that his feelings become a lot harder to ignore. Watching that realization slowly hit him was one of my favorite parts.
There are plenty of funny and sweet moments, but the story also gets more emotional as their feelings become harder to avoid. And yes, there’s a little spice too. My biggest problem? I finished Volume 1 wanting Volume 2 immediately, and Seven Seas currently doesn’t have one listed.
The slow realization is half the fun. Instead of Kanda suddenly understanding his feelings, you get to watch the jealousy and possessiveness slowly make him question exactly what Ueno means to him. Their already-a-couple energy makes that even better.
Watching Kanda go from being completely comfortable with their friendship to realizing he wants Ueno’s attention all to himself. The man really had to connect those dots.
