Tense, addictive, and stressful in the best way

โ™ก My Review

Villains Are Destined to Die Vol. 1 immediately pulls you in with one of the strongest otome isekai setups: a college student with a painful past falls asleep while playing a romance game and wakes up as Penelope Eckhart, the hated villainess of hard mode.

What makes the story so addictive is how dangerous everything feels from the start. Penelope is not dropped into a cozy fantasy romance where love solves everything. She is trapped in a game where the affection meters begin in the negatives, dialogue choices are limited, and one wrong move can lead straight to her death. Every conversation feels like a strategy battle.

Penelope herself is such a compelling lead because she is sharp, sarcastic, exhausted, and completely focused on survival. Her situation in the Eckhart household mirrors the loneliness and mistreatment she experienced in her original life, which makes her anger and desperation feel understandable. She is not trying to be sweet or perfect. She is trying to live.

I also love how the novel plays with video game mechanics. The affection meters, forced dialogue options, and route-like structure make the story feel tense without becoming gimmicky. Penelope constantly has to think several steps ahead, and watching her push against the restrictions of the game is one of the most satisfying parts.

The emotional tone is much darker than a lot of villainess stories. There are uncomfortable themes involving abuse, neglect, classism, poverty, and power imbalance, so this is not a fluffy isekai. Some elements can feel heavy, especially with how survival and control are handled, but that darker edge is also what gives the story its intensity.

Since I am already an avid reader and collector of this series, reading the novel version makes me even more excited to own it physically. The manhwa already has such a stunning gothic fantasy atmosphere, and the novel gives even more room for Penelopeโ€™s internal thoughts, fear, sarcasm, and survival instincts to shine.

โœฟ Overall, this is a tense, addictive villainess survival story where romance is not the reward at first. Survival is.

โ˜… Why Read?

  • Unique villainess survival game concept. Penelope is not just trying to win romance points. She is trying to avoid death flags.
  • Affection meters starting below zero. The setup instantly makes every relationship feel dangerous and unpredictable.
  • Strategic dialogue choices with real consequences. Every option matters, and Penelope has to outthink the gameโ€™s restrictions.
  • Suspenseful character relationships and hidden motives. Nobody feels fully safe, which makes the tension hit harder.
  • Addictive mix of romance, danger, and psychological tension. The story keeps you hooked because survival always comes first.

๐ŸŽฎ What Makes It Stand Out

The story works so well because it understands the pressure of being trapped in hard mode. Penelope is not simply misunderstood by the people around her. She is mechanically disadvantaged by the game itself.

That makes the emotional tension sharper. Even when a scene seems calm, the affection meters and dialogue choices remind you that danger is always close.

She is not the heroine. She is the villainess. And the game wants her gone.
