Love and the Highly Sensitive Person Vol. 1
Love and the Highly Sensitive Person was such a heartfelt surprise. I went in curious about the HSP representation, but what really made the story stay with me was how gently it explored anxiety, vulnerability, and the bravery it takes to let someone new into your world.
โก My Review
Love and the Highly Sensitive Person follows Yoh Yukinaga, a hairstylist who is also a Highly Sensitive Person. When his beloved scissors begin to dull, one of his coworkers recommends sending them to a blade sharpener named Chiyo. Yoh is nervous at first, especially because his scissors are so important to his work, but when they come back perfectly sharpened and carefully maintained, he also receives a beautifully written letter from Chiyo.
That small exchange turns into something much more meaningful. Yoh and Chiyo begin writing letters to each other, and Yoh slowly becomes curious about the person taking such careful care of his tools. When he finally decides to meet Chiyo in person, he is shocked to discover that Chiyo is not the gentle person he imagined, but a blunt, sharp-tongued young man with a very different personality from his own.
What made this manga stand out to me was how much care went into Yoh’s portrayal as an HSP. The story does not treat his sensitivity like a cute quirk or a quick plot device. It shows how overwhelming everyday situations can become, how anxiety can spiral, and how isolating it feels when your mind keeps replaying every possible fear. Some of my favorite panels were the ones showing Yoh being swallowed by his own thoughts because they captured that feeling so well.
I also really enjoyed the contrast between Yoh and Chiyo. Yoh is gentle, anxious, and easily overwhelmed, while Chiyo is blunt, intense, and not exactly soft-spoken. On the surface, they feel like complete opposites, but that is what makes their dynamic interesting. Chiyo does not magically fix Yoh, and Yoh does not suddenly become fearless because he falls in love. Instead, their connection helps Yoh slowly step outside his comfort zone at his own pace.
Another thing I loved was how unique their professions were. I have read plenty of office romances and salaryman BL, which I do enjoy, but a hairstylist and a blade sharpener felt so refreshing. Their jobs were not just background details either. Yoh’s scissors are tied to his craft, his confidence, and the beginning of his relationship with Chiyo, which made the setup feel memorable.
My only real complaint is that I wanted just a little more content of them actually dating. The emotional buildup was strong, and by the time their relationship reached that point, I wanted more time to sit with them as a couple. Since this is a complete one-shot, the pacing still works, but I definitely would not have complained about an extra chapter or two showing their relationship after they became more comfortable together.
โ What I Loved
- The HSP representation felt thoughtful. Yoh’s sensitivity, anxiety, and overthinking were handled with care instead of being treated like a simple character gimmick.
- The opposites-attract dynamic worked so well. Yoh and Chiyo are completely different, but their contrast makes their connection feel even more rewarding.
- The professions were refreshing. A hairstylist and a blade sharpener is such a unique romance setup, and it helped the manga stand out from other BL one-shots.
- The artwork captured anxiety beautifully. The panels showing Yoh overwhelmed by his thoughts were some of the most memorable parts of the volume.
- The romance felt gentle and sincere. It was not about magically fixing someone, but about slowly learning to trust, communicate, and be seen.
